"The Client Technical Services Department at CRC provides professional evaluation and information relating to assistive technology to both children and adults with physical disabilities. The work of the department is guided by a person centred philosophy and a recognition that assistive technology can be a channel to empowerment and equality for people with disabilities. Teamwork and collaboration are central to promoting the most practical and effective solutions to meet the needs of people who contact the service. The interdisciplinary team of assistive technology advisors brings experience from a variety of backgrounds including, engineering, information technology, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy. The professional skills of a special needs advisor are incorporated into the educational assessment of children. The team operates both a centre based and national outreach service. Nationally, their work is complemented by a network of regionally based Technical Liaison Officers who are available to offer support and follow up to people in their local environments. As far as possible, the team work in partnership with local agencies to provide person centred responses."

"The National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) can assess blind and visually impaired school-going pupils for the use of assistive devices and software. Before undergoing a 'technical' assessment, all children under the age of 18 years, must first have their levels of usable vision assessed at NCBI's low vision clinic. Following the 'technical' assessment, a report is issued to the Department of Education and Science upon request. The NCBI is the principle dealer and supplier for many low cost hardware and software options for which quotations may be obtained. The NCBI is also recognised as a clearing agent for funding schemes operated by the Department of Health and Children through the local area health boards. These schemes are known as 'Technical Aids Grants'. By means of grants, assistive devices and software can be provided to school-going children for their personal use at home. Application forms for consideration for these grants are available from the NCBI."
